Inside The Daякcнip Mind of KOOL SKULL

Frank here with another installment of Inside The Daякcнip Mind. This time around I’ve brought something that’s extremely unique and flows so well that you would think it was just one big song! I really enjoy listening to this and recommend it if you plan on going on a adventure on foot. Very cinematic and expansive, the album & artist I’m speaking of is KOOL SKULLS‘ ‘B8KDBRKZ‘.

What drew me to this album is how well it’s mixed/produced: very clean but in your face at the same time. I don’t really have a favorite track on this album because as a whole, it’s excellent! The album is 26 tracks titled in reverse alphabetical order, which is actually quite suiting given the flow of the album. Just when you think the songs over you hear clapping at the start of ‘R‘ then goes into some drum hits around 1:11 which have a heavy hip hop feel to it. Then at 1:34 the grimy bass kicks in! That pure ‘griminess’ of this album definitely suits the coming Halloween season & is great to listen to during random any journeys you may take through the dark ‘haunting’ woods.

The song ‘Q‘ starts in with a creepy xylophone that will haunt anyone’s childhood! But at :14 the drums kick in with a heavy ass hip hop style that makes you wanna listen to more. It flows right into the track ‘P‘ which continues the creepy sound the album has now taken on, leaves me wondering what these would sound like with Juan’s excellent vocals layered over them. You can hear a example of his vocal work in my favorite video by him titled ‘FUNKY SLIME.

This album is a must love due to the unique flow it throws off, capped off with it suiting the fall weather. Also is great if you want to listen to a full album and have it convey to you that its one big mix. I got lucky enough to ask the man a few questions about up-coming goodies coming from him in the near future & what hes got in the works now. Take a gander down below to read our conversation and enjoy this great piece of art!

Frank So what were your major influences in music & what did you use to compose this album?

KOOL SKULL originally, my dad got me really into the white stripes. I was a huge jack white fan. Other than that, I listened to an Absurd amount of PJ Harvey, Pixies, Beck, Beastie Boys, Chemical Brothers, Gorillaz, The Hives, The Strokes, Air, Moby, the cramps, X, & the germs. Iggy Pop, Darby Crash, and lux interior especially influenced m desire to be a performer. I always just wanted to get on stage and be a total fucking weirdo and have people in a crowd Bing really into it lol. Once I started getting serious bout the Internet, I started finding all sorts of weird shit that totally flipped my idea of what music was, upside down. Among these findings was A Faulty Chromosome, Mr. oizo, Fuck Buttons, CSS, The Unicorns, & some other sit I can’t think of. My friend lars showed me Mindless Self Indulgence, when the video for “animal” came out, I became obsessed with the director, Mdot Strange. It was mdot’s YouTube channel that showed me chipmusic, breakcore, and all sorts of dark electronic music. Mdot Made a ton of music, but also included nullsleep’s music in the film “we are the strange”. So then it was all about kittenrock.co.uk where I clicked on downloads to Chalices of the Past, and Joss Manley (a.k.a. JT, or JOsstintimberlake). Joss Manley introduced me to an natively new love of weirdness that I have tried to emulate ever since. Chalices of the past’s “LGPT1CH” really taught me how to use the piggy tracker, since the project files were included for free.

I used Korg Gadget, Virtual ANS, audiobus and Cubasis on my iPad Mini 2 running iOS 8. iPads are amazing amazing tools that have enabled me to do so much in a mobile interface, that it really blows me away. Korg Gadget is such an amazing songwriting tool. I honestly think more people should go mobile, and try to see how far they push their limits before they make the decision of buying an expensive controller, or the newest thing. Don’t talk your cellphone or old hardware for granted, it could just be capable of teaching u a lot of things and might just keep you sane on lonely or sad days.

Frank So I recently got to kick it with you at Little Sound Assembly & absolutely loved your stuff live! Do you have any upcoming work that will have vocals, or do you just save that greatness for live shows?

KOOL SKULL Well, I have new songs with vocals coming out soon but I am being more and more cautious with releasing lyrical songs. I want the video to b done. I want everything to be kinda flawless before the actual presentation. Everything around the songs are basically just as important as the song itself. The design of the website, the press photos, album cover, everything. The longer I work on music and art, the more stuff I release, the more defined what I want to release becomes, and the more work I have to do before I actually put something out. 8BKDBRKZ was kinda like something I did in a burst of energy lol at once, so there ain’t much thought put into how it comes across. The vocal stuff takes more time.

Frank So the word on the street is you got a net-label in the works! Care to share any info about that & or any upcoming goodies coming from that?!

KOOL SKULL   that’s a secret, but there’s going to be a soft drink too.

Frank Do you plan on having a upcoming LSDJ (or Nanoloop) album? Just because I see you now have both cartridges.

KOOL SKULL MAYBE. I got some shit in the works, but nothin to mention right now. I never stopped using LSDJ, I just got preoccupied with other hardwares for fun. I like mixing it all up.

Frank Thank you for taking the time to answer these questions! Hope to see you again real soon!! <3
